Green
I am starting a new section since I am very interested in going green. I don’t particularly think of myself as a bandwagon jumper, so I am not doing this because it is now hip or something. I am just really really interested in doing my best to help maintain the planet for my daughter and any future family members. As well as the rest of the world, me included.
So here are some of the links I have found that I thought were great:

This is a good site in that it is both Geeky and Green. Check out the discussion on the rotating skyscraper in Dubai that is being built.
Hurray for San Jose! San Jose, CA Leading the Country in Sustainable City Living. I have seen official city cars that were priuses (is the plural priui?) and spoke to a gal writing tickets who told me they were trying to turn the whole fleet over to hybrid or electrics. Wow!

This one is particularly close to my heart since I love design. Check them out. Here is what they have to say in their blurb:
Inhabitat.com is a weblog devoted to the future of design, tracking the innovations in technology, practices and materials that are pushing architecture and home design towards a smarter and more sustainable future.
I am such a design geek. I love their article on treehouses by Mike Chino.

Thomas Friedman likes these guys too. I think their goals are admirable. Check out their short term objectives below (now that is something to strive for):
VDS 2.0 aims to design, build, and test a high performance 4-passenger automobile for which the energy and materials used in manufacture, operation, and eventual recycling are minimized for a factor 20 improvement over standard life-cycle costs for an average on-market sedan; that provides 200 mpg energy equivalency or better; that exceeds performance requirements necessary for diffusion into near-term markets here defined as 0-60 in less than 10 seconds, 200 mile range, and top speed of 100 mph…

Check out this awesome solar plug in bag! I love green design stuff.

This seems like a good place to point out a book I think you should read. I really like Thomas Friedman’s articles in the NY Times about the environment. I got to hear him speak for an hour on his new book listed below at the Book Expo of America in Los Angeles last month. He is a gifted and rational speaker. Check it out.
(Bonus points for him using the Hieronymus Bosch triptych that I hate so much called The Garden of Earthly Delights. Yuck. I think it gets his point across nicely.)

They currently have a nice article about using Bamboo in construction. Bamboo is renewable and fast growing. We should be using more of it. Especially in the bay area. Apparently it is very earthquake resistant too. Here is a fact from the article:
Due to the lightweight and favorable elastic properties of bamboo, buildings made from it are very good at resisting earthquakes. All 30 houses in the epicenter of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake survived without any damage in Costa Rica.

Worldchanging is a solutions-based online magazine that works from a simple premise: that the tools, models and ideas for building a better future lie all around us. That plenty of people are working on tools for change, but the fields in which they work remain unconnected. That the motive, means and opportunity for profound positive change are already present. That another world is not just possible, it’s here. We only need to put the pieces together.

An unprecedented level of political interference threatens the integrity of government science. Because policy makers depend on impartial research to make informed decisions, we are mobilizing scientists and citizens alike to push for reforms that will protect our health, safety, and environment.
Interference at the EPA
A new UCS investigation of the Environmental Protection Agency reveals an agency under siege: hundreds of scientists reported political interference in their work, significant barriers to the free communication of scientific results, and concerns about the agency’s effectiveness. The investigation combines dozens of interviews with current and former EPA staff, analysis of government documents, and survey responses from 1,586 EPA scientists. Subsequently, both the Senate and the House of Representatives held hearings to highlight the misuse of science at EPA and call for reform.
Check out an article here on the White House refusing to open an email from the EPA using the “if we haven’t read it, we don’t have to do it” defense. It doesn’t work as a kid, why are people allowing the White House to get away with it?
