Help out our local kids

Help out our local kids!

Turns out that our local charity www.familygivingtree.org is short of school supplies for needy kids. About 2ooo backpacks short! For the full story, click here. I am putting my money where my mouth is and donating enough to buy 2 backpacks for the kids. How about you?

Open Source Science

Check out this great article from the New York Times by Cornelia Dean. I think this is a great idea. Scientific problem.. maybe more brains could help me figure out the answer… Cooperation at its finest.

I have a book somewhere about this general concept of cooperative problem solving. I will update when I find it.

Plug-In 2008

Check out what San Jose is hosting this week: Plug-In 2008, a convention about plug-in hybrid cars, which runs Monday through Thursday at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The event isn’t open to the public but does include a public session Tuesday night.

While I am totally excited SJ is hosting this I think it is stupid that this isn’t open for at least a full day to the public. There is tremendous support here in Silicon Valley for green energy and green cars and the public should be allowed to participate! Well, at least they are having a convention. I hope they figure stuff out soon!

P.S. I would like to be on the go in my very own plug-in hybrid so hurry up design folks!

New: www.SupportFirstResponders.com is up!

Hey there, got my new website www.SupportFirstResponders.com up and running.

Support First Responders Men’s T-shirt

When I lived in Santa Cruz I had the honor of training to work at their 911 center there. I passed the background check, the training and things were going swimmingly but it turns out a visual person shouldn’t do an auditory job. I was too slow. Slow by seconds, which in another job would be fine, but too slow when people are in trouble (not fine).

So I didn’t make it. I was sad at the time but happy that I got to meet so many really neat people. There were hardworking, honorable men and women there at the center as well as all the firefighters, police officers and paramedics that stopped by. I felt grateful that I got to meet them. While I was there there was also a controversy in Santa Cruz about people not wanting to pay a little extra on their phone bills to make sure 911 was fully funded.

To me that was the ultimate in stupidity. We all want 911 to be answered when we call! That is a no-brainer.

So I thought about what if anything I could do to help. I am an artist, and clearly not cut out for actual call taking. (Though I did get some great stories out of it.) So I came up with this shirt design.

And I will give 60% 100% of the profit from these shirts to my local first responders-San Jose.

(I still have some details to work out about to whom to give the money exactly. I don’t want to mug firefighters in reverse… knock em down and throw money at them. ;-) but I will put it aside until I can get that figured out. I will post the details of who will get the money as soon as I figure it out. Since I JUST launched this and have no money yet, I figure I have a little time.

UPDATE: I thought about it some more and I am gonna DONATE 100% of the profits.

Submitted my “Road Less Traveled” design for review to Threadless.com

Once I get feedback if it is good enough I will submit it to the Threadless.com ongoing contest.

Unfortunately I think you have to be a member of Threadless to vote on a shirt but if you don’t and you would like to comment, please go to http://www.threadless.com/critique/19458/The_Road_Less_Traveled and vote.
