Theo Jansen: Kinetic Sculptor

I saw his stuff a while back and thought I had posted him. You might have seen some of his work on some BMW commercials. He reminds me of a modern Da Vinci in terms of how his things are engineered and look. What I wouldn’t give to resurrect Da Vinci and put both of them in a room (with a universal translator) and be a fly on the wall. Clicking on the pictures will take you to the various animals he made.

They are all wind powered and move with grace. Enjoy.

Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison

I found these folks because of a threadless.com contest (I am a member of Threadless.com) where some jerk stole on of Robert’s photographs and tried to pass it off as his own! He is being lambasted by folks there (including me) and we are calling for Threadless to remove the “design” (which is a take off of the great original photo “Flying Lesson” from the “Architect’s Brother” traveling Exhibition).

I find their images to be fascinating. I find the Architect’s Brother set of photographs less disturbing than their others. My favorite of all is “Night Garden” because it is A) cool and B) reminds me of the movie “The Prestige”. The folks at the movie may well have gotten their idea for that from here. Looks likely but I love it either way.

Check out these amazing photos!

Just beautiful. This one is my favorite.
Click on the picture for the full article from the NY Daily News.

I hope the model wasn’t too ticklish.

3D Digital Master: DigitalBlasphemy.com

Okay, so the name was a little weird. I am sure it is some kind of in-joke.
Anyway, Digital Blasphemy (a.k.a. Ryan Bliss) has a zazzle shop so I ran across his stuff that way. It was beautiful! I have seen a lot of poorly designed and even more poorly executed digital art in my time. NOT this stuff. This blew my socks off. His stuff is amazing. I joined his fan club because I really want to keep an eye out for new work.

He also has an option to become a member on his digitalblasphemy.com home site. I don’t have the money right now but wow, when I do… He has over 600 high resolution wallpapers dating back over ten years. They are stunning.

What you say? You don’t want wallpaper for your computer, you would rather have a print? Then check out the zazzle shop link here.

So take some time and go check him out! Enjoy! Heck I enjoyed just clicking over and over on the links below because he has it set up so you get a new image everytime you go to his main site. There was a lot of great art.

Amazing Photographs: John Gavrilis Photography.

I love his photographs. They are bright, vivid, beautifully composed photographs. Click here to go to his website. I like his southwest/slot canyon photographs and his west coast pics. He not only sells artwork directly from his site but you can find him on imagekind. I wanted to add myself as a fan but couldn’t find his gallery on imagekind, only his individual photos when I searched on his name. If anyone knows how to find his gallery there, please let me know. In the meantime, enjoy his rich, visual smorgasbord. A bonus for me was when I spoke with him during a Santa Cruz art thing, he was a nice fellow.

Amazing Art:

Phil Hansen is an amazing artist. Check out his website or the People of the Web story about him. His stuff ranges from totally awesome to scary and totally crazy.

The first picture is graphite on eggs. If you go to the site you can see the broken portrait. I really like the Bruce Lee portrait: Phil made it by dipping his hands in paint and hitting the canvas. (95″ x 166″) You gotta check out his time lapse videos on his site of his creating his work. WOW! Definitely check it out!

Kinetic Sculpture Race 2006

This is where the Kinetic Sculpture races started years ago. There are now races like this all over the world. I like this video since I think it captures the flavor of the race and the people who participate in it. This is from 2006. If you are interested you can go to youtube and search on kinetic sculpture race to get all kinds of footage. It was great fun to watch. I think it would be more fun to participate! Check out that sculpture of the weird eyes! I believe it is called Extreme Makeover.

Japanese Art:

Rice Paddy Art: Found on pinktentacle. I think this art is amazing. It is hard enough to do this at normal size but to be able to grid it out so that it can be seen from above blows me away. And for those of you who assume this is done in Photoshop, look at the harvest pictures!

Beautiful wooden keyboards: I wish I could read more of the site but I don’t read Japanese. Found this by following links from the pinktentacle website. I think these are amazing. Everyone seems to be going so high tech it is neat to see what true craftsmen and women can do. There are links there also for other hubs and things done with wood. Very cool. Definitely check it out.
