Sometimes a cop IS around when you need one

I had my bit of schadenfreude today! For those of you unfamiliar with the word it is German and means “enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others”. [German, from Schaden=damage + Freude=joy]. I even made it a t-shirt a while back: Have you had your schadenfruede today?

There was a power outage today so it took us an hour and a half to get home instead of 25 minutes. Apparently someone hit a power pole and took out a whole slew of traffic lights on a major cross street.

I was pulling up to a light after slogging my way through traffic when this obnoxious guy and his buddy pull up next to me in their PT Cruiser. They smirked at me. I was startled because I was the furthest most right lane. They weren’t even in a lane. They smirked at me again and blasted in front of me. I let them go because I don’t care to tangle with people like that. But I was just wishing there was a cop around to see that bonehead maneuver when… voila!

A highway patrol officer had seen the whole thing! She pulled them over. I clapped to her as we drove by and she smiled. I laughed and laughed as I passed them. Sometimes there IS a cop around when you need one!

Gilbert & Sullivan-one of my favorite things…

I have definitely did not have a normal childhood. Oh, it was average in most regards but not in others. Word play was among my family’s favorite things. Not only words, but being clever with them was important. Books, plays, movies, jokes; all play with words was important. Perhaps the fact we were all book nuts also helped.

I didn’t know people didn’t know about Gilbert & Sullivan. But today, I ran across someone who didn’t have a clue who they were. What? I thought. What? How is it you don’t know these musicals?

When I stopped to think about it, of course not! Most people probably wouldn’t. It was just my weird upbringing. Not everyone is going to know about a pair of guys writing biting political satire in musical form in the late 1800s.

But to keep up the tradition I just introduced the Pirates of Penzance to my child this past weekend and there was much giggling, and stomping and singing around the house soon thereafter. See link in either movies to check out or Talk like a Pirate day posts.
